Microsoft kills unlimited OneDrive storage

Microsoft has announced that its unlimited cloud storage on OneDrive won't be unlimited anymore. Launched over a year ago, the service was a "gift" for paid Office 365 Home and Personal subscribers.

When launching the service, Microsoft expected that an average subscriber would use about 5.5GB of storage space. However, it turned out that some subscribers used more than 75TB of space to put entire high-def movie collections. Due to the fact that those users "abused" the service by using much more than the average users should use, according to Microsoft's plans, now the company will switch to newer conditions.

Starting next year, instead of unlimited storage, paid users will receive only 1TB of storage space. The old 100GB and 200GB paid plans, will be removed and will be replaced with a 50GB plan at $1.99 a month. Free OneDrive storage will also be cut, from 15GB to 5GB. The 15GB camera roll storage bonus for using OneDrive on iOS, Android, or Windows Phone will be removed as well.

"These changes are needed to ensure that we can continue to deliver a collaborative, connected, and intelligent service," says Microsoft.
