Microsoft is reportedly working on a Slack competitor

Microsoft has announced that it's working on a Slack competitor, called Skype Team.

The service, currently being tested internally at Microsoft, is supposed to let users chat both privately and in groups. Basically, Skype Teams will offers the same 'channels' and direct messages as Slack, but the killer feature will be threaded conversations. It will also have a number of features now found in Skype, including video and voice calling.

There are speculations that Skype Teams will make its way to the Office 365 suite as part of the monthly subscription for businesses, and it will potentially be available as a standalone product as well.

In March, rumors surfaced that Microsoft was interested in purchasing Slack for up to $8 billion but co-founder Bill Gates and CEO Satya Nadella didn't like the idea. Slack is a cloud-based service dedicated to team communication launched back in August 2013. It can be accessed on a huge number of devices running Windows, Max OS X, Chrome OS, Linux, iOS, Android, and Windows Phone.
