Microsoft dumps Metro from Windows 8

According to a person familiar with the matter, Microsoft is telling Metro developers to stop calling Metro things Metro, because Metro is already taken by some cranky German company called Metro. Microsoft has decided that Metro UI will be no more, and won't be appearing in any future version of Windows.

Microsoft has used the Metro branding as a codename for its typography-based design language. The company has used a number of elements from the design language across its Windows 8 and Windows Phone products, as well as the recently released Office 2013 preview.

The company is reportedly "working on a replacement term and plans to land on that by the end of this week." Until then, employees have been advised to refer to the Metro style user interface as the "Windows 8 style UI." In a statement the company said:

"We have used Metro style as a code name during the product development cycle across many of our product lines. As we get closer to launch and transition from industry dialog to a broad consumer dialog we will use our commercial names."
