Instagram plans to launch its TikTok clone Reels in the US and more than 50 other countries in "early August". The announcement comes as TikTok finds itself in a newly weakened position, after India banned the short-form video app and the Trump administration indicated he would do the same.

"We always look at what people want, and innovate every day to find new ways to improve experiences for people," a Facebook spokesperson said. "Many platforms have come before us to create products that meet people where they are — Snap, TikTok, others — but we think we can do this in a way that's unique to Instagram, and meets the demands of our community."

Reels is an Instagram feature that lets users record short 15-second videos set to audio. They can then be shared on the platform with the idea that they may go viral. The plan is for Reels to be shared on Instagram Stories as well as more permanently on feeds.

Facebook, which owns Instagram, has previously tried to jump on the TikTok trend with a video app called Lasso. However, this doesn't appear to have been very popular.
