Steven Sinofsky, the leader of one of Microsoft's most lucrative businesses, has unexpectedly left the company. The announcement came barely two weeks after Microsoft unveiled Windows 8 with launch events in New York City in which Sinofsky figured prominently.

"I am grateful for the many years of work that Steven has contributed to the company," Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said in a company release. "The products and services we have delivered to the market in the past few months mark the launch of a new era at Microsoft."

Microsoft tearing itself apart? You can imagine the poisonous atmosphere at Redmond as the once great company's fortunes decline. The healing balm of Ballmer?

Big as it is, Microsoft lives hand to mouth, so dependent is it on cash flow.

There will have to be a legacy outfit to continue product support. Imagine the consequences of no continuation of support: hackers rubbing their hands with glee.
