Google plans to offer Fiber to more than 30 cities

Google is taking steps to expand Google Fiber, its ultrahigh-speed Internet service, to 34 cities in nine metropolitan areas across the country as it grapples with the challenges of working with local governments. The areas include: Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, Phoenix, Portland, Raleigh- Durham, Salt Lake City, San Antonio and San Jose.

City mayors from across the country have already called for private partnerships to boost their local Internet connections. Now Google is asking city governments for infrastructure blueprints and a streamlined construction process to scope out the construction costs.

"People are hungrier than ever for faster Internet, and as a result, cities across America are making speed a priority," Milo Medin, the VP of Google Access Services, said in a company blog. "Now that we've learned a lot from our Google Fiber projects in Kansas City, Austin and Provo, we want to help build more ultra-fast networks."

Google announced in 2011 that Kansas City (in both Kansas and Missouri) would be the first city to get Fiber, after a nationwide contest during which one city even changed its name to Google for a month. Last year, Google announced that Fiber would also go to Provo, Utah, and Austin, Tex.
