Google Maps introduces real-time location sharing

2017-03-22 16:26 by

Google has announced a new location sharing feature that allows friends to share their location and ETA inside of Maps.

This feature will be available soon across Google Maps on iOS, Android and the web. It has many practical uses. From a business perspective, workers can share their locations with a boss, co-worker, or client to set better expectations of meetings. From a safety perspective, maybe someone is walking home alone in the dark and feeling a bit uneasy or scared - they can share their location with friends and family for reassurance that they can be located if something bad was to happen.

You can share your real-time location with Google Contacts or send a link using other messaging apps. The tool prompts you to set how long you want to share your whereabouts with a friend.

To share your location with a contact open up the side menu, then tap Share Location. Tap a contact, and you'll see different options for sharing. You can choose to share your location from 15 minutes or up to three days. Alternately, you can share your location all the time until you manually turn it off. You can tap that same menu to turn off sharing at any point.
