Google has launched Android Things, a new platform for the Internet of Things (IoT). It is an Android-based OS, which uses Android APIs and the company's cloud-based services for delivering updates and enabling voice commands.

The company says the new OS is combining Brillo, its previous Android-based IoT OS, with other Google, to make it easier for developers to build smart devices.

"We incorporated the feedback from Project Brillo to include familiar tools such as Android Studio, the Android Software Development Kit (SDK), Google Play Services, and Google Cloud Platform. And in the coming months, we will provide Developer Preview updates to bring you the infrastructure for securely pushing regular OS patches, security fixes, and your own updates, as well as built-in Weave connectivity and more", says Google.

Currently Android Things is available as a Developer Preview for a number of popular development boards, including Edison, NXP Pico, and Raspberry Pi 3.
