Google and Dish said to be planning wireless network

Google has been in talks with satellite TV provider Dish Network over a possible partnership to build out a wireless service that would rival those from carriers such as AT&T and Sprint, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

According to the Journal, the talks are at an early stage and nothing is not sure yet, and Google is just one of many companies Dish is talking to.

Dish has been hoovering up spectrum for about four years now, and has made no secret of the fact that it wants to partner with another company to build a wireless data network that could make the most of it.

Google, meanwhile, has been working on gigabit fiberoptic technology, which it rolled out to Kansas City earlier this week. The move with Dish would take Google in another new direction and could support its goal to make high-speed Internet service more widely available in North America.
