FCC to vote on strict privacy rules for ISPs

The Federal Communications Commission will vote on Oct. 27 on a new privacy proposal, which aims to protect broadband users.
"The problem is," the FCC chairman Wheeler said in a statement Thursday, "there are currently no rules in place outlining how ISPs may use and share their customers' personal information."
"For decades the FCC has required telephone companies to protect the information associated with a phone call," Wheeler added. "Similar rules don't exist for broadband service today. That's a gap that must be closed."
The proposed rules will require broadband providers to tell customers what information they collect, how they use it, and the types of entities with whom they share it.
The rules would apply to ISPs such as Comcast and Verizon, but not service providers including Google, Facebook, and Netflix. The Federal Trade Commission sets privacy policies for them.
