FCC to Review Cell Phone Radiation Standards

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) wants to formally investigate whether its regulations do enough to protect consumers from harmful radiation from cell phones. The agency hasn't examined emissions standards in 15 years. The proposal came from FCC's chairman Julius Genachowski.

The proposal would need to be approved by a majority of the FCC's five commissioners before the agency could release it for public comment. If it is approved, the agency would consider changing its testing procedures and seek input on the need to either strengthen or ease the current standards.

"We hope and expect that other federal agencies and organizations with whom we work on this issue will participate in the process," said FCC spokeswoman Tammy Sun in a statement.

"We fully expect that the FCC's review will confirm, as it has in the past, that the scientific evidence establishes no reason for concern about the safety of cellphones," said John Walls, vice president of public affairs for CTIA, the wireless industry's association.
