FCC Net Neutrality rules published, lawsuits expected

The FCC's new net neutrality order has been officially published in the Federal Register. This action starts the clock on the rules' official start date which is 60 days from Monday, April 13 (June 12th).

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission adopted the new rules in February with the aim to regulate broadband as a public utility and to prevent broadband providers from selectively blocking or throttling or offering paid prioritization of Internet traffic. The rules apply to both fixed and mobile broadband Internet access services.

Publication of the rules, reclassifying Internet access as a Title II telecommunications service, will probably trigger lawsuits from broadband providers that oppose the rules.

Several organizations have already filed lawsuits in different appeals courts. Among them are U.S. phone association USTelecom and broadband provider Alamo Broadband. It is also expected that CTIA - The Wireless Association, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) and American Cable Association will also sue the FCC against the proposed rules.
