The FCC released Monday its annual report on cable industry rates. According to the report, the average monthly price of expanded basic cable TV rose 5.4% in 2010, to $57.46. The price for expanded basic service is defined as "the combined price of basic service and the most subscribed cable programming service tier excluding taxes, fees and equipment." The commission said the average basic cable programming package increased by 7.1 percent to $19.33 during the same period, and that prices were lower in markets where incumbent operators faced competition from overbuilders.
Customer-premises equipment lease fees also increased in 2010, according to the FCC survey. Set-top and DVR rentals averaged $7.12 monthly for expanded-basic service, up 4.6%. In noncompetitive markets, CPE prices rose 5.4%, to $7.05 per month, while they increased 3.7% in competitive markets, to $7.22 per month. Read more -here-
