Facebook and Instagram were down for the better part of the day Wednesday, suffering their worst outage in the social media giant's history. According to Facebook, the outage was the result of a server configuration change.

"Yesterday, as a result of a server configuration change, many people had trouble accessing our apps and services," Facebook tweeted on Thursday. "We've now resolved the issues and our systems are recovering."

The company also said it was considering whether to refund advertisers for lost exposure due to the problems, which internet outage trackers showed affected users in Europe, Japan, North and South America.

Facebook takes tens of millions of dollars of advertising revenue every day. Media reports earlier said millions of users were affected, and thousands took to Twitter on Wednesday and Thursday to complain under the hashtag #facebookdown.

Facebook in 2008 experienced a daylong outage due to a "bug," affecting its 80 million users. This time around, Facebook's reach is much broader, with the tech behemoth having acquired Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014.
