Encryption tools the NSA still can't crack revealed in new leaks2014-12-29 13:06 by DanielaTags: NSA, encryption
Recent reports have revealed that regardless of the regular attempts by the NSA to intercept different kinds of communication, there are still several types of encryption that the agency wasn't able to crack. The findings are based on Edward Snowden's newly revealed documents. According to them, the NSA routinely intercepted Skype conversations and SSL/TLS traffic. It also successfully decrypted VPN connections. However, the NSA still struggled with PGP, Truecrypt, Tor, Cspace, OTR and ZRTP protocols. Although the documents date back to 2012, experts consider it unlikely the agency's digital spies have made much progress in cracking these technologies. Interestingly, it turned out that open source software programs are far more difficult to manipulate by the security agencies than those developed by companies, such as Apple and Microsoft. This is due to the fact that anyone can view free and open source software, which makes it more difficult to insert secret back doors without being noticed. "Properly implemented strong crypto systems are one of the few things that you can rely on," Snowden said in June 2013, after leaving to Hong Kong. Read more -here-
