Cox Communications Inc., the third-largest U.S. cable company, intends to offer much faster broadband service to residential customers this year as entertainment increasingly becomes delivered over the Internet. The move comes as response to Google's Fiber service, which has put pressure on cable operators like Cox and Time Warner Cable Inc. to boost their offerings.

"We're working on our road map now to bring gigabit speeds to customers this year," Pat Esser, the president and chief executive officer of Cox, said yesterday in an interview with Bloomberg Television's Betty Liu at the Cable Show in Los Angeles. Cox customers have been asking for faster speeds, he said.

Cox is San Diego County's largest cable company, with roughly 500,000 subscribers across its local footprint. The privately held firm also serves Orange County, Phoenix and several other regions nationwide. The fastest residential speed that Cox offers now is 100 megabits per second, for which it charges $100 a month.
