China tries to rein in Internet with new threats

China has released new rules limiting the nation's media outlets from sourcing unverified information from the Internet, in its continuing bid to crack down on online rumors.

The China's General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) said newspapers must publish corrections and apologies for circulating false reports as and when they do so. Serious violations could lead to the suspension or even revocation of a news outlet's government-issued license, it said in a statement on Thursday.

The rules also ban reporters and news media from reporting any information taken from the Internet or mobile phones without firsthand verification. Violators may be barred from working in media for five years, and serious infractions may lead to criminal charges.
