AT&T T-Mobile deal is officially dead

Just hours after a report surfaced about AT&T coming to the realization that the T-Mobile buyout would likely never be approved, the carrier has dropped its controversial $39 billion bid for Deutsche Telekom's U.S. wireless unit.

The failure of the deal leaves the second-largest U.S. mobile carrier with few attractive strategic options as it seeks to challenge market leader Verizon Wireless. AT&T has made back-up plans, but the carrier is waiting for FCC approval on a Qualcomm spectrum deal. The agreement is largely-expected to pass, but analysis had also predicted the T-Mobile merger would win approval as well.

Deutsche Telekom said it is still exploring other options, including a complete sale, or pooling assets with satellite television provider Dish Network, which acquired spectrum in a deal for DBSD North American and Terrestar satellite networks.
