AT&T is increasing prices for its unlimited plans. Starting March 2017, AT&T subscribers with unlimited data plans will have to pay $40 per month instead of $35.

AT&T has been working to drive subscribers out of its grandfathered unlimited plans that are no longer available to new subscribers. The plans were originally a tool to encourage people to get an iPhone during the early days of the modern smartphone era.

"Our Mobile Share Advantage plans and our AT&T Unlimited Plan provide several benefits that our legacy unlimited plan doesn't. If you have a legacy unlimited data plan, you can keep it; however, beginning in March 2017, it will increase by $5 per month," AT&T said in a statement.

AT&T isn't the only carrier hoping to reduce the usage of grandfathered plan subscribers. Verizon is currently weeding out data hogs that use more than 200GB of wireless data per month.
