2012-01-19 11:03 by

AT&T on Wednesday hiked rates on its smartphone and tablet data plans. The new rates will go into effect on Sunday, but only new customers will be affected. Those under contract will keep their current rates. AT&T said that existing customers will not be required to switch to the new rates, even if they upgrade their phones.

Under the new pricing structure, AT&T's most basic 300 MB/month plan will cost users $20 per month. It currently stands at $15. On the tablet front, 3GB will be $30 per month while 5GB will be $50 per month. Previously, the carrier offered 250MB for $14.99 per month or 2GB for $25. Tablet data plans run for 30 days and automatically renew unless you cancel; overage fees are $10 per additional gigabyte.

"Customers are using more data than ever before. Our new plans are driven by this increasing demand in a highly competitive environment, and continue to deliver a great value to customers, especially as we continue our 4G LTE deployment," said AT&T chief marketing officer David Christopher.
