AT&T, Sprint settle lawsuit over 5GE 'deception' case

AT&T and Sprint have settled a false-advertising lawsuit over AT&T's usage of "5GE" branding that incorrectly labels 4G networks as 5G.

Sprint's lawsuit sought an injunction to prevent AT&T from using 5GE tags on its devices and advertising. Earlier this year, AT&T started displaying a "5G E" logo on certain upgraded parts of its LTE network. The phones weren't actually connecting to 5G networks, and the move was roundly derided: T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint all criticized AT&T's new logo, with Sprint's CTO claiming it was "blatantly misleading consumers."

"Calling its network '5GE' (or '5G E' or '5G Evolution') does not make it a 5G network and instead deceives customers into believing it is something that it is not," Sprint had said.

AT&T will still be able to continue its 5G Evolution advertising and marketing campaigns. It's just unclear if it now has to clarify that 5GE isn't real 5G and if it has to release extra ad materials to clarify what the tag means.
