Following its preview at CES 2014, ASUS is excited to launch the ASUS RT-AC87, the world's first Wave 2 802.11ac consumer router and the fastest 5 GHz with speeds up to 1.73Gbps. This is the first router on the market that's capable of hitting the top 802.11ac Wi-Fi speed of 1.73Gbps on the 5GHz frequency band while supporting top 802.11n speeds on the 2.4GHz band. Powered by Quantenna's QSR1000 4x4 Multi-User Multiple Input Multiple Output (MU-MIMO) chipset, the ASUS RT-AC87 offers high speed and wider range for an optimal wireless experience.

The RT-AC87 comes with four external antennas and features Universal Beamforming to maximize its range in the home or office. It's also said to improve signal strength and performance for older 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi clients. To achieve its top 1.73Gbps speed, however, a client would need to use the same chipset. The router, however, supports all existing Wi-Fi clients on the market.

Asus promises quick setup via a pre-installed, web-based user interface. An exclusive application called AiCloud 2.0 that can transform the router into a personal cloud server has been included, which caters for syncing, sharing and streaming of content stored on the network, attached USB storage devices or Asus WebStorage via a web-based interface.

Asus says that the new router will be available shortly for a suggested retail price of US$269.99.
