According to recent reports, Apple is actively working on new wireless charging technology which may be ready in 2017. What's new about the technology is that it will probably enable an iPhone or an iPad to be charged over the air, with the charger located inches or feet away.

Current "wireless" charging phones, such as Samsung's Galaxy S6 don't require a direct power connection but must be in contact with a mat or charger. Even Apple's Watch can be charged wirelessly. It also requires the Watch to be magnetically mounted to the power source.

It's still unclear what approach Apple and its partners will take to deviate from the current standard of wireless charging. There's no word if the wireless charging feature will come with the iPhone 7 reported to be released in the second-half of this year.
