Apple and Samsung to develop e-SIM card

According to a recent report, Apple and Samsung, along with other manufacturers, plan to revolutionise the SIM Card used in mobile phones nowadays. They want to replace the standard SIM cards in their mobile devices with embedded SIM technology (e-SIM).

Currently, the companies are negotiating with the GSMA (a trade organization representing global telecom companies) to develop and introduce to the market the new e-SIM cards.

According to the companies, an electronic SIM card can be moved quicker and easier between mobile networks. It is expected to not be removable and will probably be finalised and launched in 2016. Several mobile carriers are engaged in negotiations with Apple and Samsung , on how to implement the new e-SIM cards.

Apple last year introduced its own iPad SIM card but it hasn't gained wide support from carriers. The GSMA e-SIM could be used on future generations of the vendor's iPhones but for now it's not expected to replace the Apple SIM.
