Need Some Advice.

Post by Neptune-Sya »

mnosteele, any ideas to better increase my speeds under Win Xp.

Im using Sympatico DSL.

TCP options string = 020405a001010402

MTU = 1480
MTU is optimized for Windows XP PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.

MSS = 1440
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1440, which equals MSS.
MSS is optimized for Windows XP PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for maximum throughput.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 17280
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 17280
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
506880 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
253440 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
126720 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63360 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 691.2 kbps (86.4 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 276.48 kbps (34.56 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 119 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Hi Neptune-Sya :D , try the following settings in CableNut and see if they help any:

DefaultReceiveWindow = 128000
DefaultSendWindow = 16384
DisableAddressSharing = 1
InitialLargeBufferCount = 100
InitialMediumBufferCount = 240
InitialSmallBufferCount = 320
LargeBufferSize = 81920
MaxFastTransmit = 6400
MediumBufferSize = 15040
PriorityBoost = 0
SmallBufferSize = 1280
TransmitWorker = 32
FastSendDatagramThreshold = 1024
EnableFastRouteLookup = 1
EnablePMTUDiscovery = 1
IgnorePushBitsOnReceive = 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 31680
MaxFreeTcbs = 8000
MaxHashTableSize = 16384
MaxNormLookupMemory = 5000000
SackOpts = 1
SynAttackProtect = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 0
TcpLogLevel = 1
TcpMaxDupAcks = 2
TcpMaxHalfOpen = 100
TcpMaxHalfRetried = 80
TcpRecvSegmentSize = 1440
TcpSendSegmentSize = 1440
TcpTimedWaitDelay = 30
TcpUseRFC1122UrgentPointer = 0
TcpWindowSize = 31680
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 10
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 8
DefaultTTL = 64
DisableUserTOSSetting = 0
TcpMaxDataRetransmissions = 6
DefaultTOSValue = 92

Also do the following:

1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.

2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

3. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link). If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

4. Clear your temporary internet files.

5. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.

6. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot, anything checked in red is spyware and safe to remove.

:) :D

Okay, those suggested values did increase my download speed slightly, showever, i went to microsoft to test the speed of my download, and it went from 108k/s and continued to decrease all the way down to 60k/s untill the download fiinshed.

=[
any ideas?

It's normal for downloads to decrease some, try the OOL FTP Test in my Help & Tips. Aslo just try the settings for a few days and see if things seem better. :) :cool:

Hi again

Post by Neptune-Sya »

:( mnosteele, every tweak i've done for my connection has never allowed me to see results 790kbps, whether it be on dslreports or on a speakeasy site.

I don't understand why everone else on average reaches the adverstised speeds of Sympatico's caps 960/120, and im always 200k shy of that. =[

This blows. :(

You have a DSL line and your distance from the CO could be the reason, how far away are you? :) ;)
