the A in ADSL

Post by stevebakh »

hey... just wanted to check somethin... the A in ADSL stands for asymmetrical .. so does this mean that using "ADSL" you can't have equal up and down stream [eg 512/512]? thanks!

Exactly. 512/512 would be equal upload and download thus called symmetrical dsl or sdsl.

aDSL - Asymmetrical - not the same speed up-down

sDSL - Symmetrical - Same speed up-down

iDSL - Incremental, usually accomplished by adding or subtracting channels to a circuit that is transpoerted on a channelized T-1 (24 64K channels, with 23 usable for voice or Network traffic)

While s and i can be used to describe each other, they are distinctly different than aDSL, whereas they require special provisioning, and aDSL is service available across the POTS (plain old telephone service) network
