xp1600+ equals 1050mghz?

Hi, I'm not too familiar with Athlon processors. So I've got a question. My friend just purchased a amd xp1600 cpu and installed it. Now, when computer starts up, it shows that it's running at 1050 mghz. Now, is this correct? Because I thought that the cpu was suppose to be clocked at around 1.4 ghz. Anyone got an answer for me? Maybe the vendor gave him the wrong cpu??

Check the cpu see what it says. What kind of mobo do you have? Does it have jumpers or is it jumperless?

He is running the CPU at a 100mhz FSB. To get the correct speed of 1.4GHz the FSB needs to me set to 133Mhz. Some quick setting change in the bios will fix that.

Yup. Cuz the speed is 10.5x 133= 1400Mhz or 1.4Ghz

Yea, happened to me on my 1900+. Read 1200 on my MSI, all i had to do is raise the fsb to 133.

Yeh once when the bios screen was up i turned the computer off my the power off button and turned it back on and it showed it was a 1500 but then i just went in and clicked load optimized defaults and it put it back to my 2200 then i jsut went in and set the other settings.

yeah, thanks guys. I'll let him know. oh, also the cd-rom keeps dissappearing, and at times it won't even open... any ideas? could it be the cables?

so if he raises the fsb to 133mhz, is that consider as overclocking it? He's using a value ecs board. So not much overclocking options is provided. The one option is that to raise the fsb to 133mhz, the ram must also be raise to 133mhz. There are no divider options given.

No, that is the default speed of the Front Side Bus.

he needs to change the jumper on the mobo to 133, not 100

so that's changing the jumper on the board itself, not inside the bios settings, rite?

Check the mobo's manual on the jumpers and locations.

it'll be done in the bios. Unless you have a very old board, most bios options like clock speeds and fsb are software controlled.

Not really, jumpers still need to be checked sometimes. My uncle just bought a computer with AOpen MB and XP2000+. There's jumpers setting on the board which sets at 100Mhz ~ 124Mhz and 125Mhz ~ something (I forgot) two choice, then within that range you can adjust from BIOS. The computer first came with the 100Mhz jumpers set and it was running at 1250Mhz, but after i put it in the 133Mhz, it shows XP2000+ (1.66Ghz) right away

its a pretty new board, and it can be software controlled. I just wasn't sure what the default fbs speed is. Because on my p4 board, my fbs is set at 100mhz, and if I increased the fbs, it be oc'in it, it seems.
So for amd the default speed is 133mhz? does that apply to ram as well?

P4 boards come in 100 and 133 flavors - with rdram this equates to 400 (with pc800) and 533 speeds - rambus has 4 'pipes' so multiple the bus by 4.
amd uses 100 and 133 - with ddr (DoubleDataRate) ram you are looking at 200 and 266
Data passes between cpu and memory and northbridge chip on fsb- changes affect both. Make sure that all affected components (mobo, cpu, ram) support the speed you want.
