Really a solid distro..........recognized everything right off the bat....on the net now with it. Very cool.

It came out the other day and I d/l the other night. 2 CD's and it works great.
It is so weird saying this but a site like Slashdot.org looks so much better in Linux than in Windows. The graphics on that page seem to have come alive. The picture of the old Atari 2600 joystick looks like the real damn thing....it looks like a damn picture in hi-res. Weird. I guess since they are so pro open source, they must have optimized the site just for that reason.
It is soooooooo fun....even SG has a new refreshing feel to it.
BTW...you can d/l the Mandrake ISO's from Linuxiso.org

I downloaded all three CD's from LinuxISO.org and have yet to install.. waiting for next weekend to put mandrake 9 on a extra HDD that I have...
easy setup huh bro?

hmmm...for some reason, I always thought that it looked like a rendition of a joystick rather than a true photocapture.........oh well.it still looks good and I'm very pleased with it.
guess I'm just getting old. lol

hmmmm....this may be congestion due to the release of 9.0.

I had the same slow speeds as well.. Then I used Getright and used 6 segments and I got the full speed of my connection... 40kbs I was only getting 10kbs at first but soon gained speed after useing getright

GetRight has a kick ass mirror search function built in. Last function on the right of the main window I think.
It had about 12 mirrors for that Linux boot-from-cd file.

Red Hat Linux 8.0 is out today as well ! I happen to like Red Hat, haven't tried Mandrake tho.

I was wondering... how difficult would it be to set it up to do the following tasks (which currently my Win2k Adv. Server computer is doing), keep in mind I'm a total Linux n00b...
It's a machine with two NIC's, one to the internet and one to my LAN.
- be a VPN server accessible from all Windows operating systems
- be a NAT/ICS router for all local and VPN clients
- be able to run an ICQ-network compatible client
- be able to run an edonkey compatible client
- be able to host files for Windows operating systems
- be able to host an FTP server
- be able to host a small HTTP server (mainly 1 page with few graphics)
- be able to host pop3 mail accounts in limited number (like 5 or 10)
given that I would have a DSL connection with static IP and domain name registered to it.
Would it be doable to configure a Linux OS to do these tasks for a semi-Linux-newb?
I'd appreciate any ideas on this.

Yes it would be possible. Mandrake 9.0 has many options to choose from during the install process. The only hitch I see is that you would have to use WINE to run edonkey...I mean why run a compatible app when you can run the real thing. I don't know if edonkey has an rpm or other linux compatible version but you can run most windows apps using WINE.
I say go for it. If you set aside a partition, you can practice your skills on your box now. When you feel comfortable, and Mandrake has drastically improved their wizards, you can format the partition, start over and install only what you want or need.

Yeah, the graphical install has been good for me ever since Red Hat 7.x ... With one exception, when I was installing RH 7.2 on the SG webserver last March, it didn't pick up the 0-channel SCSI RAID card, and I had a hard time finding a driver in order to install Linux... They are quick to ofer fixes and you get a free subscription to their "Red Hat Network" with RPM updates that are almost as easy as the Windows Update site.

Mandrake 9 has been randoming logging me out,
then locking up on the desktop when logging back on.
Back to Mandrake 8.2 for me
Plus my mouse scroll wheel works again!

1:00am in the morning (last night) I got a steady 250 K/sec at a UK FTP site. Got 1 and 3, still need #2 disk, but the site has been too slow all day. I'm going to try again later.
