i have setup my network using a netgear fs105 switch, cable modem to uplink port and other pcs to the other ports. OK, so both can connect to the internet and one can see the other's shares fine but one pc sees the other pc but not any of the shares , what could be wrong ?

Are you still using the same user name on each computer if so try using different user names. Also make sure the work group is the same for each pc. Did you install Netbuie? If not add that protocol. I had similar problems with a computer i had running Me, it could see the computer but could rarely ever connect to the shared folders. Once Netbuie was istalled on each computer all computers share fine.

If both computers can see each other in network places, then your workgroup and protocols are fine. Also logging in with the same username doesn't matter at all.
Are both PC's WinXP?
I'd check to see that the computer that you cannot access does not have anything shared out...double check your shares.

Dont know if XP would have a problem with that but Me sure did. Me kept telling me that because the computers both had the same name that it should be changed to see if that works. I actualy got tired of Me and reformatted due to it complexities for networking. I ended up going back to 98se. Not to mention 98se had better benchmark testing then Me.

just installed NetBeui on both pcs and i still have the same problem. Yes both pcs are windows xp (pro.) and the shares are set fine, like it wont even show the printers or scheduled tasks on the other pc when i try to map a drive.

Computers with the same computer name...yes...that's universal across all OS's, but logging in with the same name...meaning username...no, no problems at all.

If the computers were seeing each other already...then NetBEUI isn't needed, as it's obvious TCP/IP is setup correctly. Yes NetBEUI is easy to setup, especially helpful for someone not comfortable in configuring TCP/IP, or can be used as a bandaid when things aren't working. But he already has browsing correct, as he can see the computers.
Do you even get prompted for a username and password when trying to hit these shares?
Any computers have two NICs installed?

no , each pc has 1 nic and then they go to the switch which is connected to the cable modem. when i go view computers on workgroup and i click the other pc it asks for username/password, so i put it and it just keeps asking for it. From this pc i cant even see the shares on the other.

Ahh there you go, it's a permissions problem.
Computer A...what do you log in as...meaning exact username and password.
Computer B...what do you log in as...again, meaning exact username and password.
In each computer Mangement console, under users, add an account on each computer matching exactly how you log onto the other computer.
The shares on the computer not "revealing" itself..under sharing...add that account to the share.
