UNCAP AND BE BUSTED!!!

Umm... I'll admit it. I was curious. I uncapped my SB4100.
The speeds were LOVELY! It was NICE to have a 2mb upload...
Until 1:14 pm today (4/2/2002).
My Identi-ring rung. I knew it was trouble. Those three rings can only mean ONE thing.
"Hello, this is so and so from Comcast Abuse department..."
I almost pooped my pants.
They made me reset the modem and ummm needless to say, they warned me not to do it again or else they will suspend me.
NEVER AGAIN!!!
Dont do it! Dont do it! Please DONT DO IT!

How many warnings from this forum's members does it take?
Everytime an uncapping thread emerges fair warning is given...

Your lucky you got off with a warning, I've read where people were charged and had to pay fines.

And I've been down on my knees thanking god for it. It only lasted ONE DAY!

You know, SG discourages uncapping for a
reason...

Weird. It was like we (SG) always knew. Go figure. No matter how many Wet Paint signs you put up,
someone has to put their finger in the Wet Paint because they don't believe.
You're pretty lucky, crazyjw1971. And I do have to say you're pretty brave for sharing your experience here. Thumbs up to ya!

If you have the balls to uncap, at least have the brains to do it with an unregistered modem so that you don't get that phone call.

WOW! I'm shocked too!! You got very very lucky that they only gave you a warning and not at least take away your service.
Unregistered modem?

Hey Dood.
I was wondering, what system in use today would allow an unregistered modem to even sync?
We bought a new SB4100 and couldn't tie in to the system until we called and registered it. ATT is up to date even up here in the northern tip of Utah.

Just for the fun of it... send me a message at
Normsdoctor@yahoo.com Content not important. I want to get a general fix on your location so I can introduce you to a few of the boys. They will explain to you why it’s wrong to do something even if you believe “not getting caught” makes it acceptable. You’re K-12 right? Still lots to learn my friend.

lol you guys dont belive how easy it is to get caught doing this. Just because you havent yet it will happen. As for the question on how the modem will sync.....It syncs because you load the config file onto the modem so it doesnt need one from the cable company.......JUST A WARNING this is an easy detection for the cable company....change it back to what its suppossed to be and they wont care but leave it where it is and pay the price.....It would be cheeper to pay for a dedicated OC line then it will be to pay what its gonna cost you to get out of trouble.

Lots to learn, huh???? First of all, I only uncapped because I wanted to see if I could do, after I accomplished it, i quickly reverted back to the factory settings. Second, I must admit, i have to learn, like not to let this kind of stupidity upset me like it has. You honestly think that because I'm still in school I don't know what is right from wrong? If I didn't, don't you think my modem would still be uncapped??????? and introduce me to a few of your boys, thats honestly supposed to be intimidating? LOL i'm so scared.

And to you BaLa, Get caught doing what? Paying for my 1500/128 legally? Not Violating any of Comcast's rules? Honestly if you were my neighbor and you reported me I would just sit there and look at you like a fool, because nothing in my house is illegal, incoming or outgoing.

Thanks for the second post of clarification. Your first post:
hehe it was only a crime.....when u got caught, I uncapped my sb4100 on @home and yeah, the upload in the mbps is lovely)
left us to believe you were an idiot.
Your second post cleared up a few unknowns like:
1) You said nothing about uncapping to see if it could be done… and then quickly reverting back to the factory settings. You left us to believe you were still sucking down all the bandwidth you could steal.
2) You came across like all the people who “do” get caught (it’s not a crime if you don’t get caught). And yes… that makes it appear that you have lots to learn.
3) The statement “let me introduce you to a few of the boys” was intended to wake you up to a possibility.
I’m just some bozo poster here at Speed Guide. Maybe a lurker or two will see value in this exchange of words.

I understand it's wrong and it's stealing bandwidth from other users, but can we be a lil nice to the kid? He did it for the heck of it, and learned his lesson at the same time lol. We know for a fact that he won't do it again, so lets not give him a heart attack.
Pssssst.. yo ill. if u were my next door neighbor i'd come over to yo casa and personally kick yo ass..

I have two lists on my desk. One is the “red” list and the other is the “green” list. Those on the red list are people and/or groups that I really dislike... and I post that list on my office wall for my employees (updated weekly).
On the green list are people and/or groups that can come over to my house on Saturday and help me drink vodka. You’re name is on the “green” list.
I like expensive vodka. I provide the ice.

I'll have to agree with liquid.
Just think about how the internet works...... and clearly think how the main cable company must work.
how they log things that go in...and go out...etc.
isnt hard to see....that some guy with a normal cable modem is sitting there uploading at 2mb a second..or running an FTP etc.
Or that when they go to ping your cable modem, its not there config file?
I don't know, i havnt really seen an arguement that can say how/why uncaping wouldnt be like being instant-caught.

Which list do you want to be on?
*edit* If you come to my house and bring vodka for me... your name goes on the green list. If you come to my house empty handed, and then you drink my vodka... your name goes on the red list.

I'm not trying to stir this things up here I have check with many friends who work for cable comapines everyone says this topic is BS.
Unless your completely a moron and most criminals are the cable company can not catch you unless you are running a server with huge uploads..... if your just the casual / heavy gamer with no uploads it is very diffculft for the cable company to detect you.

Detection has nothing to do with the amount of traffic you having coming and going thru your modem...

Special rate to uncappers.
Bail Bonds 24 hours a day. I take all major CC cards!

Read thru that entire thread...interesting, to say the least...
But like I said before, it's not the amount of traffic coming thru your modem that tips the cable company off that you've uncapped a modem...

So true Indy so true. It is very easy to tell when a person is using the wrong config file.

IMO if you want to screw around, go ahead.
But do it legally.
If you want to learn how your ISP caps your modem go ahead, but be smart.
I repeat, have fun, but do it LEGALLY!

"Your stealing my bandwith" You know I understand the reasoning to a point, but it sounds very childish. So next time you download an MP3 just think about you "Stealing" someone elses stuff. Or downloading a shareware program that doesnt terminate after the initial trial period yet you still use it.
Second, if uncapping is something they want to avoid (loosing bandwith isnt thier concern, loosing money is) better methods could be used to make "uncapping" nearly impossible for most users.
Ive never uncapped my modem, I have no reason too. Yet it makes me mad how easy it is to do. I think the broadband providers need to look at thier impact on "theft" rather then the individuals stealing from them. Lets face it we dont need speeds upwards to 3mbps to view webpages. We need the bandwith for MP3's, warez and bootleg movies!! Faster connections just mean more theft; therefore they are just as much to blame as the individuals uncapping thier modems.
So now "Your stealing my bandwith" turns into "Your stealing the bandwith I need to steal from someone else" ironic aint it??

I find the ATT Broadband TV ads very interesting. They say things like "faster downloads of MP3's".
Its not that the cable compaines are losing money...it's just they are not making the huge amount of monies they want. The CEO needs to justify laying off 10,000 people earn $56 million a year versus s/he $29 million a year.
