Hi all, Well it goes to show we learn something everyday and I need to learn now.

My Sister to avoid paying a rental fee for her cable modem asked me to purchase and install a new modem. (after reading a few posts maybe she should continue to rent)

I purchase a Motorola Surfboard SB4100 installed the modem and USB driver (gateway, no expansion slots only usb) I am pulling an IP address however no internet access. After a couple of hours of trying this and that booting and rebooting I called tech support and the said it needed to be provisioned.

The big question?? What is provisioning and why would it take three days?? I know it will probably be a shorter period of time but in this computer age why so long?? Just curios or ... did I miss something in my troubleshooting skills or lack there of. Thanks Dave


Quick rant…. Gateway (and I am sure a few other companies) has so many proprietary programs running in the background plus all the programs my sisters family has loaded (including bonzi buddy) has the system s so bogged that it literally takes five minutes to boot. The world would be a better place if we could keep our systems tidy.

Provisioning, according to cable companies, is the act of entering your modem information (S/N, MAC, Make, Model) into their system so the router recognizes your modem, allows it to pass traffic, and knows which configuration file to send it.

Why would it take three days? Because your cable company is terribly inefficient. Entering something in a database only takes a couple of seconds...maybe minutes. They must have a backlog....

I work for the cable company. We hate @home's provisioning system more than you do. The cable companies always get the flak for long provisioning, but we don't even touch it. The new provisioning system with Comcast only requires that your cable modem sn be placed on your cable account and the provisioning goes through in about 30 seconds. With @home's provisioning it could take 18-36 hours AFTER we have input the account info, thus explaining your delay. If you are on an @home system, then there's your answer.

when i did tier2 support for @Home when i first started we at tier 2 could provision a cable modem for ANY MSO

then comcast took over their own provisioning and the 3 day wait on the escalation board became a reality (the 18-36 hours)

when i left @Home we could still provision for Insight formally intermedia (except for the parts in Nashville that comcrap bought) and it still took less than a minute to enter the info and less than an hour for it to go through

you either do not work for a cable company, you r lying, or you r just plain WRONG but either way it is just more crap from an MSO appologist to a sub........GET IT RIGHT

and if you say im wrong then answer to me why ATT, Cox and the others can still provision a modem on @Home while the SUB is on the phone and Comcrap is the ONLY ONE THAT CANNOT

LOL 18-36 hours???????? When I asked @home to switch my modem from the RCA POS to the Motorola Surfboard Sb4100 it only took them about 3 secs to provision it. They even tested it in the office before i took it home.
