Hi, I recently looked into possibly switching to a
wireless internet provider - in the hopes of getting
off of AT&Tbi. One of the reasons, is that I would like
to get my downstream closer to what it had been before
they switched networks.

They tout speeds of up to 2Megabits a second -
both upstream and downstream.

Comparing this to AT&T 128kbps\1.5Megabit - it seems
like absolutely no contest hands down. Wireless would
win in both cases.

Is this extremely misleading? With cable, you can reliably download from the same site and reach your maximum speed.

With wireless would it be a crapshoot, some days you might get 1.5Megabits\s, and other days you might be lucky to get 500kbps?

Like if I was transferring files from home to work, some days might be 500kbps - and some 1.5 Megabits per second.

Actually reaching 2Megabits a sec reliably - would be unlikely?

It all depends on how far you are from the wireless platform. The farther away, the more your speeds suffer.

I had directpc for a while back in 98 i was about a mile from the main transmitter. I got a steady 300KBps just about all the time.

Doesn't wireless bb have poor ping times?

Just stay with attbi, may not be the best but its still better than wireless.

i agree with xbit on this one. when it's raining out you can forget about wireless working and if you do alot of online gaming the ping sucks. either stay with attbi or get a better provider.

I guess I'm leaning towards sticking with ATT.
Still on the fence tho. 2Megabits a sec bi directional sounds nice.
They are actually cheaper than AT&T in some cases, but I guess actually having speeds like that would be unlikely.

So far - everyone I've talked to hasn't had any problems with the reliability of the service. But, the speeds they are getting seem to be grossly under the 2MB threshold.

The speed of my connection seems to be between 350K and 500K which was not the 2000K they said I MIGHT get, but it is still pretty fast. I've only had one problem connecting to the service, and that went away before I could place a call to tech support. When I have called tech support (I was using a wrong username by accident), they have been really great and available 24x7.

Person3:
I'm running a home network with 3 computers through a linksys router, performance has been great with downloads of 400-600kbps/upload about 100-150kbps. I had 1 question for tech support. Called them up on a Friday night at 8PM, got someone live right away and fixed my problem (my error) within minutes. I've been running this setup for 3 weeks with no outages and no performance degredation even during a downpour..
