Welcome to SpeedGuide!
I'd go for the Motorola SurfBoard 4100. I own one of those, and it's pretty speedy and stable.

the cable company offers a toshiba 1101 (she said it was a model DTS but I don't believe that's correct) for $249

Seems kinda steep to me! Thx

Do you have to purchase one or will the cable company lease one to you?
If you have to purchase, what are your choices (what modems does your provider support)? There are several awesome modems out the for around $150.00

I purchased the Motorola SB4100 at the Wiz for $200 four months ago. It may be cheaper now.

Honestly, all modems are fairly similar....if you search around, you'll find about a thousand threads on this same subject. The bottom line is that everybody has a different preference and will tell you one is better than the other.
Most people like what works best for them....my preference is the Surfboard - simply because I am familiar with the light sequence and it has an internal diagnostics page that allows me to see if there are any line problems.
If you are hell bent on purchasing one, stick to big name...you'll actually find that they can be cheaper. (I've seen Motorolas, RCAs, and Toshibas for around $150 on sale at Best Buy and CompUSA.

My cable server uses the Toshiba PCX1100. Had it about 4 months.. never a problem. They don't give an option to buy.
What I like about it .. there is NO configuration for me to do in my computer.
But this may be do to my cable server? That I don't know.
I did a self install when I went on cable internet... installed a NIC in my computer, ran new cable to the modem, plugged in the power and modem cable to my computer.... I was online!
A few weeks back, bought me a new computer, just unplugged the modem cable from by old computer, plugged into the new computer and I was online.

You are correct...this is because of your cable company/ISP. That has nothing to do with the modem.

Then it looks like all ISP's would do it like that... so simple for people like myself.
