I'm just planning to get high speed Internet access at home. I need some "101" info:

1. Should I get Cable Modem or DSL? What's the highest download speed they can provide?

2. My new house has TV cable in all rooms. If I choose cable modem, can I use two or more cable modems with only one account without using router? I actually just want to know how I can use my pre-existing wires to connect 3 or 4 computers to Internet through cable modem(s) without wiring my house again with CAT5 cables.

3. As what I know wireless NIC supports up to 11Mbps. Is this speed slower than Cable Modem/DSL?

This has been posted many times and the answer is always that it depends where you live and who is giving you what service. Usally Cable wins because there are not many distance limitiations like dsl and it usally has better speeds. Give us some more info like the isp's and the speeds they will be offering.

If you live in a suburban area, then cable is probably the thing for you. I have (or had) excite@home and on an average i got 4 Mbps DL speed and 500 kbps UL speed and I live in a small suburban area outside of Cincinnati. If your too close to a major city, then ur cable will be slower because the ammount of people on a single server would be higher... so buy DSL in largely populated areas. Other wise just stick with cable.

Note: If you live in no-mans-land, check the cable company ur looking into and see where their backbone runs... If your close to it... Definately get their service! G'luck!

2. You can connect a cable modem for each connection, but you will have to pay for each account. The best way to go is with 1 cable modem and router.

3. Output of the cable modem is ethernet speed of 10Mbps

How would one find this information?

If your looking into RoadRunner, you could go to roadrunner.com or whatever their site is, and check to see if it is available in your area, and most will show a map of where the backbone line runs. That is one way. Their are others. They are all pretty easy, so you can probably find out weather ur near one or not.

I would take cable over DSL if I had the choice. In reality, both have problems, but I have had my RoadRunner for almost a year w/no problems what so ever and I have a router with two computers and the speed is amazing. This also depends on the type of computer you have, memory and processor. Go for Cable modem!
