.DAT movie files

what do i do with a .DAT movie ? what do i use to open it?
As long as the files are complete, I either change the extension to .avi or .mpg or I associate Windows media player to open those files.
I believe that some movies are burned in .dat format when it is done via VCD - Video CD.
