This is my set up, i have a netgear 10base T hub, 2 computers running windows 98 and a cable modem. The cable modem is in the uplink port on my hub with the it uplinked. The problem is that i cant get both computers on the internet simultanously. I have 2 ip addresses and was told thats all i need. Each comp can access the internet but not at the same time. Can anybody tell me whats wrong cause my isp refuses to answer any question regarding networking. pls help

You need a router.

Its been a while sense I have used a hub. But if I rember right you have to Make sure both computers have differant IPs, beings you have two ips. You should be able to do this. Boot each computer up on its own. Check the ip address and make sure its not the sameone thats in the seconed computer. If so try unhooking the seconed computer from the hub. Then hook it directly to the cable mode. Power down the cable modem and computer at the same time. Wait about two min. Then reboot booth backup. This should renew the ip in the seconed computer . If it dose hook it back in to the hub. Then power the main computer up and see if both will get on the internet. Sounds like your problem now is both computers are shareing the same ip.

Like I said its been a while. So I hope this works. Good luck. If not hopefully someone else here will help you.

Unless there is a router involved to dish out IP addresses it's not going to work. It doesn't matter if you assign static IP's or not. It's a hub. Only one PC will be able to connect at a time. /end thread

It can be done with two ips Just not the safest way to do it. http://homenethelp.com/web/howto/share-internet-hub.asp. He is better off using a router. But that was not his question. His question was .Why he could not get both to see the internet. I know for fact it can be done either with a hub or switch. I have used both before. For this purpose. It just not the safest way to do it.
