Laptop...so power management. Go into properties of your adapter(s)...are you allowing Windows to turn it off to safe power?

Is this a factory built laptop, or did you install Windows 7 yourself?

Your description of the "symptoms" up above perfectly describes typical power management on a laptop..when it's going into a power down mode, it will turn off un-necessary hardware such as wireless, bluetooth, NICs, display, etc. Unless you tell it not to.

If you do have your NIC properties set to not let Windows power down the device...perhaps you need to update the NIC drivers, and then install your laptops system enhancement rivers and power management drivers.

try a different cable..I've seen some not fit in laptop NIC ports very snug and when loose a little they tend to do that.
