im trying to hook up 2 dlink routers to one another via ethernet cord

modem --> router1 (DLINK DI-624) --> router 2 (DLINK DIR-655)

i have router one hooked up to lan port 4 and DHCP turned off on the second one

my problem is that when i connect to router 2 with the computer the wireless keeps dropping out and i have to dissconnect and reconnect which usually solve the problem for a short time then it drops out and sometimes it wont connect

i know that there are no problems with the wireless on my laptop cause it work just fine off of the first router im just looking to set up a second on cause i live in a fairly large house and when im in certian rooms i have little to no signal...

im not sure if it a configuration problem or not but again it will work for a short period of time before it drops out...

Why are you doing this, it makes no sence.

what i am doing is adding a second router in another part of the house to expand the wireless range so i get a signal all around my house

ad everything that i have read on how to accomplish this with the second router states to hook it up to a lan port on the second router and it works but for some reason it connection drops after only a few mins of use... so i was wondering if anyone had any input on how to hook it up successfully...

They're both the same brand router, so you have the same LAN IP ranges on each, 192.168.0.xxx.

Cascade those, and each on thinks its local LAN is 192.168.0.xxx..so any PC behind router 2 will be "OK..which way do I go George???"

What you want is to use your 2nd router as an additional access point.

First, take your 655..it is a current generation router, many many times more powerful than your very old 624. You want your most powerful router as your primary router. So setup the 655 as the router to your house, with the modem connected on the WAN interface.

Now, take your old 624..and convert it to run as an access point and expansion switch for your network.

Disable DHCP on the 624, change its LAN IP so it's in the same range as your 655..but on a unique IP, a standard IP for access points is .245. So if the 655 is 192.168.0.1, make the 624 192.168.0.245.

Uplink the 624 to your 655 using a LAN port on each of them, you will not use the WAN/Internet port of your 624 anymore.

Make the wireless of your 624 the same SSID as your 655...same authentication too. Different channel, make the 655 1 and the 624 11.

You can use the other ports on your 624 like an ethernet switch..and plug in other devices.
