hello friends
I tried the services provided by http://www.shieldsup.com and found that all of my ports are closed. After that i made two entries in the exceptions part of windows firewall
1.> port 21 (ftp service)
2.> port 20 (ftp data)
After this i again tried the service and found that the ftp port was still closed. well how is that possible, i just opened it!!?
1.> Is it my modem, or my ISP(which provides my modem with dynamic IP)?
2.> Is my modem only a modem or a modem/router?

If you have a router yes it's a router..doing its job..NAT, hardware firewall.

Many ISPs ship you modems...which are actually combo modem/routers. A gateway appliance. So many people "think" they just have a modem.but actually it's also a router..which is good, as they're protected by the NAT. So which make/model modem/router?

control panel>windows firewall, and add the ports there

I did add port in windows firewall as follows:
1.> port 21 (ftp service)

but still i got ports closed.
I saw my modem settings lately and found it had a firewall which was enabled. i am working on a page to show you a detail of my modem as i cant find its maker.

This may sound stupid but do you have a ftp server running on your box? If not then the ports would not be listening and would show as closed.

After checking for opened ports i tested it using https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2(shields up!) and here is the result:


So as obvious the ports are open but somehow no outside connection is accepted.
I have set an exception for port 20 and 21.so what should i do next so i am visible to the outside world!!?
I connect to the internet using a modem which works as a router too, i think but am not sure of it. here is a picture of one of its options=>

I do need to say that i didn't find any setting to control NAT, or the Firewall as shown in the summary picture!
But i do need to scream out that i need my pc to be accessible from outside!!!

In your screenshot of your ports I did not see anything showing for port 20,21 which makes it seem that you are not running any ftp server software on your system so the ports aren't listening. Are you wanting someone from the outside to be able to connect to your system on those ports? Also if your modem is actually a router also you need to find out how to set up "port forwarding" to your system after you have ftp server software set up.

These are just my observations. I am sure others will take a look. Good luck !

I agree that the port20/21 are not listening. But i have port23(telnet) and others in listening mode. here =>


and after i observed this, i took the test again and again found that the services could not be contacted from outside!

here it is sorted by port and port 21(telnet ) is clearly visible in listening mode which is unavailable from outside.

In that case you need to get into somewhere in your router/modem and do port forwarding. It will be so that the router gets hit on like port 23 then forwards that request to your box. You need to know the ip of your box, get to a command prompt and type ipconfig. It should return something like 192.168.x.x. That is the ip you want to put in as the box to forward to.

i know i got to port forward my router but it has no such option!. Thats strange and makes me think it might just be a modem after all. But it shows settings like NAT and FIREWALL which are enabled by default and i can't control them.

Look for documentation for your modem/router. If it is natting then that is your trouble. Turning off nat would them leave you very vulnerable to the net. Seems like you would have to be able to make changes to that wan screen. It looks like you would need to make changes to that wan page. Top left says it is set to auto, if you can change that box you may be able to make changes but remember that if nat is off then you will be vulnerable.

I got this modem from my ISP. There is no documentation available.

If it is anywhere it would be an option in the LAN setup. Is there anymore pages that are available within that area? If not I really don't know. Try contacting your ISP to see how to port forward on their modem.

There are no more available options. What i have been suggested in case of non-availability of Port-Forwarding option in a combo modem is to use it as a bridge thus forwarding all traffic to my pc and use some software to control PPPoE and Firewall.
