Modem drops off

I've read a couple cases of this incident on google, which is what lead me here.. but no one offered a solution to the guy's post.
My internet essentially freezes frequently. It goes to a point where it's so slow that it's practically frozen about once every 5 minutes or more (Playing an online game, I can see people moving around me, but I will have 999 ping and cannot act). Then, eventually, one of those times the internet will drop off completely for about a minute.. and my 3Com modem decides to give me one angry grunt. The power light on the back flashes green for a few seconds, but never turns orange. I essentially have to wait it out until it's over.
A soft reset won't help the problem. I've gone through every step (I think) possible with my router. I've added static ips, secured the wireless, and even tried adding route. I also updated the firmware (Linksys WRT54G router).
My ISP essentially said bug off and fix your router when I asked their tech support. What could be the problem here and the best way to fix it?
I'm no noobie to networking (I like to think), so simple answers like "unplug and plug in your modem" won't do me much good

As an extra note (for some reason I can't edit.. anyway), I've thoroughly checked for Spyware, viruses, etc, so I don't believe that can be a cause of the problem.

What speed did you pay your ISP to give you?
Post your TCP Analyzer report.
What you described can happen if your TCP Window is set too low for high speed bandwidth due to signal queues at the signal devices.

edit : I don't know what speed they gave me, I know they advertise up to 10 megs of download speed.. I'm sure we have the fastest of whatever.

I hope this doesn't change anything -- I contacted my cable company and they said I have 10mbps download, 1mbps upload. Do the settings up still apply? Don't want to slow down my bandwidth.

Your original TCP Window at 17520 can service you only to a speed of 1 mbps and that is the reason your signal devices have the hiccups due to long signal queues.
TCP Window set to 256960 will free up the signal queues and increase your speed to 8-9mbps. After using the settings I gave, turn power to the modem and router off for a few minutes to let them reset and clear all accumulated errors.

Continuing with the dumb questions. This has occured with my brother's laptop as well, and not sure about two wired computers. I should apply these settings to all computers.. I assume.

Can be applied to all non-Vista Windows comps with a 10 mbps cable internet line.

Hate to say it, but I've done it to all computers on my network and I still freeze up. And yes, I did let the modem and router have a 5 minute break and gave them a fresh start in life.

Do a tracert to
http://www.yahoo.com and post.
To do a tracert, click 'Start' and then 'Run'. Type "cmd" into the box and click 'ok'.
A DOS black screen will appear. Type after the C:\>
tracert

and press enter key
When test is completed, move mouse cursor to the DOS black screen, click right and choose 'select all'.
Move mouse cursor to the Quick Reply box of this forum, click right and 'paste'.

Yes -- My modem and router are sitting on top of a computer tower. I assume I should try and seperate them a bit.. and will give that a shot.

Relocate your modem and router a few feet away from each other and also away from other electrical devices. Also, do not coil up any excess length of signal cables:

I download torrents from time to time, but I do not seed.

Even when downloading torrents, p2p can overwhelm the signal devices with too many simultaneous connections if appropriate limits are not set in the p2p program.
See this link for settings appropriate limits:

Already had those limits set (defualt), and I experince freezing without the program even running.

Log into your 3com and check power levels.

My 3com doesn't have a web browser interface I can log into.
I've tried 192.168.1.100. Also, I checked my modem's documentation and tried 3commodem.com whatever it was and that did not work.

Your router may be blocking the connection. Try through a direct cable connection from comp to modem.
How old is the modem?

It's 3-4 years old. I am taking my modem back to my local ISP's office today to switch it out for a new one. If this doesn't work, I'll check back here.

You have to call your ISP and register the modem.

I did this before you posted or did not realize you posted. The lady at the office knew NOTHING and told us we did not have to register. So I called them this morning, finds out we were running 128k.
If I have any more issues with my internet freezing I'll contact you.. thanks for all the help. Turns out we pay for more than 10 megs (what most customers get) so we were getting jipped big time! Thanks again.
