I still have one machine running win95 at work. It's a Pentium 233 mhz with 128 MB of ram.
Why? Cause there is a particular software that won't work on XP.
So get new software? Idiot boss won't spend the money.

I work in the government, and we have alot of setups like that. Some apps are so old/specialized that we have to jery-rig our networks for it to run....sigh... causes most of our headaches too

I remember installing that on my AMD 386DX-44mhz, I think I had 8mb ram back then and cant remember the hd (500mb possibly). I remember flipping out at how nice it looked once installed but it really pushed that thing to its limits hahah.

Hi there!
I'm new to this forum (and all the stuff discussed on it, as I lag a couple of year - i.e. an eternity - behind concerning computers.)
I just upgraded to a free 500Mhz Celeron machine with 256MB RAM a friend was going to just throw out. It's running on ME (which I will upgrade to XP). Our previous machine (which we still have) is a Presario with an AMD K6 with 266Mhz, 64MB RAM (after upgrade from 32), still runs on Windows 95. We are generally very low-tech, and I thought about letting my 5 year old use it for hacking around on. Still, though, I thought about formatting the HD and putting 98SE on it, to possibly network it to our "new" old machine. Would this even make sense? (Probably not for the geeks - and I mean that with the utmost respect - out here), but just for practicality reasons, as we have some games on the newer machine that she wants to play when daddy doing his thing. I don't have the CD's for the game, so I can't just install it on the old machine. Also, I'm not sure if it would even be possible for the older machine to be hooked up to email and internet through the newer machine, as I believe our older machine by itself is just too slow to handle broadband. Again, I am new at this, so please be kind in your responses...
Oh yeah, to get back to the original intend of this thread, we also have an Acer notebook with a 10" screen (approx) that has a 33Mhz Intel processor and runs on Windows 3.1. :-) Haven't used it in a long time, though. My wife spent close to $2000 for it when she bought it new in 1994.

Welcome to SpeedGuide.
Yep you can run Windows 98 SE on that AMD K6 and network it. Even though Microsoft was going to end thier support for Windows 98 they are still posting security updates that you can download from "Windows Update" feature. Both my Wife.. and my Nephew (who is 4 yrs old), runs Windows 98 SE..
You could put a lot of differt O.S.es on that computer...
I have a 386 laptop...with 4 megs of ram and a 80 meg hard drive with Windows 3.11 on it.. I can still go on Internet Relay Chat and Telnet with it.. still off of my network..
If you get stuck with something.. you can post back to the software or networking forum... A lot of happy people around here..
Later,
Shinobi

I still have a copy of Win95 on about 29 floppies and an old copy of Office on about 32 floppies. It took forever to install that on an old ass PC.
