Never been there. I've always envisioned it as this great place with beautiful nature. Lots of the cool people I meet, travelling and on the net, seem to be from california.
I live at the same latitude as L.A now, and its sunny here all the time, and the temp hardly ever goes below plus 5 celsius. Awesome weather along this strip.

BUT

Whenever I ask them how california is, a lot of the go, "I hate it", in this really casual tone like the answer is obvious.

Why's that? And if you love California yourself, why do you think other people say it?

L.A. has no soul. It's a concrete jungle.

I'm a tad biased tho, I live in the mountains and love nature. Too many people all in a hurry.

I love california. Born and raised here. I've traveled to almost all 50 states and many other countries, and I gotta say, there's nowhere quite like it!.
Yes, its a bit of a political quagmire rightnow and its outrageously expensive to live here, but i still love it nonetheless.
where else can you surf and snowboard in the same day?

Dunno. Only been to Hollywood, LA and Laguna(wherever the Ritz is). Too MANY people.

Faust is there, that was cool. Could not smoke in a pool hall, that was just downright confusing. Gas was pricey. People thought I was from Texas.

Come to Western NC and see how ya like it here. I have extra rooms in the house.

Cali is a Beautiful state, so much to see. just stay away from L.A. drive through if you must, on your way to other places. i love the mountains north of LA, go to the desert side during spring or fall, it is breath taking.

drive north on the 395 to Reno, NV it is a wonderfully beautiful drive. on the east side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

winters in the bay area, watching the fog roll over the east bay hills, llittle fingers sliding through valleys.

warm winters are fun here in the south, surf in the morns and snow board in the evenings.

also don't forget Yosimite, Shasta lake....

I'm honestly considering doing a big tour of the US in the summer, and weave my way back to Nova Scotia as I travel eastward. If I do I definitely want to meet up with people

Possibly a bad experience with LA traffic but there are probably some folks that woudn't be happy anywhere.

I have no desire to live elsewhere.

It's not so bad once you get used to it. Watch out for cars though since sometimes it covers the street lights.

I am a native born Californian and have lived in both parts of this state...north and south..thus the title cross between heaven and hell Currently I am in the Northern Part of the State, which I call Gods playground...where within a matter of a two hour run you can be in the mountains...playing in the snow...sunbathing at the beach....visiting volcanos or caverns...vacationing on a houseboat at Lake Shasta...or fishing the majestic Sacramento river for the fall salmon fishing run...tis truly Gods Country! this is the heaven! The hell are places such as San Francisco, Sacramento, and Los Angeles area in general , as well as all our major airports..."iffen" ya have a weak heart.."tis no place to be driving!! I cannot imagine myself anywhere else. Have a great day!!

Thanks, I'll see what I can plan...it would cost a bit and could wind up taking a while getting everwhere, but it would be awesome to hit several cities and meet everyone.

and I was thinking about this very question earlier today! I like crowds and cities, but in CA you can have that and get away, AND have good weather, and great surfing (which east coast sucks for). I have to travel out there and check it out sometime

Good surfing must be a pacific ocean thing..in japan its the east cost which is good.
California sounds like the shiznit from everything I've heard.

One reason I think about it is because I live in japan's sort of equivalent to california. Same latitude and weather, some big cities, but basically mostly tons of beautiful, untouched nature, good surfing, spacy people that follow a slightly different beat...

not where i live. sure the city has its dirty parts, but for the most part its quite beautiful here and jsut about any natural resource is just a short drive away. yosemite, Marin, Lake Tahoe, lots of great camping, rivers, lakes, etc etc

I live about an hour's drive from Angels Camp and Big Trees State Part. If you've never seen a giant redwood still standing up close and personal, THAT is the place to do it!

Pull your head out and take a look at California. Let me just use this point of reference again. You live in a state that is 1045 square miles, and has 1003.2 people per square mile. The COUNTY I live in is 3,572 square miles with 35.4 people per square mile. For the whole state it is 155,959 square miles with 217.2 people per square mile.

Your calling where I live a concrete jungle? You have over 30 times the amount of people per square mile in your state then I do in my county, and 4 times the amount compared to this state.

Come up Humboldt way when you make it out here Jayyy. We are the closest port to Japan on the continental USA (doesn't mean you can get a ship or flight to here though). It is a 5 1/2 hour trip to San Francisco and about 90 minutes to Oregon right on the coast. Redwoods growing up to the edge of the coast, rocky coasts, some beaches, tallest tree in the world (I believe it still is), bear, elk, rivers, mountains, and all around a gorgeous area.

Then there is the Southern California deserts (about to go on a trip out there in the next couple of weeks) which is gorgeous.

The Sierras are incredible.

Lassen, you can see some of the vents where steam pours out from the ground.

Going with volcanos there is Mammoth with it's hot springs.

Califonia is a great state. It is expensive, and some folks are a bit annoying. I can't tell you of any place that does not have it's fair percentage of asses. It is just a matter of finding the good folks

im just giving a general consenses on the overall state.

my state is no prize either. we have had an influx of immigrants. i feel like a stranger in my own state and crime has gotton bad.

alot of people from laos and cambodia.

also, many many hispanics coming out of the woodwork.

but, california is beautiful no doubt. But , alot of the state has been taken over by non-whites. especially the metro areas.

Hell yes, I love this place.

Far removed from the rest of the state, which I've only driven through. But DePlano and I live about 45 minutes south of the Oregon/CA border...right on the coast where the mountains roll up to the Pacific. We have sand beaches and rocky beaches, seals and whales, redwoods and ferns...simply beautiful area.

I hope you realize that I meant absolutely no disrespect to Native Americans - in fact quite the opposite.

I love SF because it is the first pale I've ever lived that is truely 'come as you are' - you don't get people juding you for what you look like or what you wear (there are exceptions of course).

For 90% of the aspects of american society that the world (including the US) despise do not exist here.

I don't really like LA, but it's not my speed. I doubt I'll ever leave SF.

San Diego is fake, while the landscape and scenery are just absolutely gorgeous. Newport Beach is even more fake, the water is actually quite nasty, LA is fun but too many people really, Santa Monica is nice and id probably live around there if I moved over to CA. Beverly Hills isnt even remotely what its been shown as on TV, hell the signs are all greasy and the paints chipping on em. San Fransisco is really strange, lots of artsy type people trying to find a place to fit in, the weather is weird. I love CA really, I wouldnt mind living there but its so far away from any type of family ive got (except my richy uncle in San Diego who isnt really family cuz he'd never help me out in any real trouble or anything like that) that I just couldnt move out there.

The bay area is an AWESOME place, truly one of a kind.

definately be sure to drop by philadelphia. john is already up there and i am a 30 min train ride from philly. nyc, washington dc, philly and a bunch of other cities are all within a few hours drive of each other. the jersey shore sucks and so do the waves, but there is quite a nightlife at the right places. besides, i will finally be 21 then! horray!

I love cali but then again I have never lived anywhere else.

Partly cloudy, mostly sunny.. ave temp of 72-80... mountians/skiing, beach/swimming, coffee shops on every corner, movie theaters, bowling, **** man, there is a grip of activities to do in any weather condition.


I live in OC, I do not go to LA, gang on every corner and everyone has to prove themselves . I only go if I absolutly have too.

Maybe the congestion of the freeways and general population is too much for the people that hate it. I'd say those people are way too impatient.
