im trying to share my cable internet connection with 2 pcs. i have a router which i plug both pcs into, but one of the pcs wont work, i tried different cables and i have tried connecting the cable modem straight into that pc... i recently built this pc and moved the modem into a different room to have this connected instead of that old pc that will not work now. I cant seem to get it to connect to the internet no matter what i do. both pcs are running windows xp...


any suggestions?

are you getting lights on the router and network card itself?? Also are you letting ur router assign the ips??


Try this if you have lights on the router and network card power down the modem then router then pc, Turn on modem wait a couple of minautes then turn router then the computer.

What brand of router??

all the lights are powered up
i think the router is assigning the ips but im not sure

restarting things and powering down in that order didnt work

i have a gigafast ethernet (ez500-s) and a linksys (ezxs55w)
neither work

i think there is something wrong with the old pc, like i said it wasnt even working when it was plugged straight into the modem. i think ill try reinstalling windows but i dont know if this will do anything.

Make sure that PC is set to obtain ip and dns automatically....



If that's setup right, see if your internet works. If it don't, do an IP config on that PC and post the IP in your next post.

in not sure how to manually log into the router, i dont see anything about that in the link.

im thinking there is something really wrong with that pc. shouldnt it be able to connect to the net at least if you have it connected right into the modem without the switch or anything? it used to work and im not sure what the problem is now.

What IP address is the computer that isn't able to connect to the 'net getting?

If it's a Win98 machine (What OS is it anyways?) it could be a bad TCP/IP stack or possibly a driver issue.

ok the autoconfiguration IP address is 169.254.36.20

i have this pc on all auto config but it doesnt say it before the ip address like it does for that one

If you have already tried different cables then it seems that your nic card is the problem. That ip address 169.x.x.x is the ip a system shows when it doesn't grab an ip from a dhcp server or it isn't manually configured.

Make sure that you have the right driver for that nic card or try another one.

just updated the drivers and then restarted and un/re plugged the switch and the modem. still no luck. my pc right now has a built in nic in the mobo, i can put my extra pci nic into that old pc and see if that works... if not i guess ill just redo windows.
