I have a work laptop that I would like to bring home and connect to my lan.

Say that my laptop is set to be in the domain " work ". Can I just rename my lan workgroup to "work" and be able to share files?

2 pc's with xp and 1 with 2000. Usernames have been created on each that match each other.

My concern is that the laptop is in a doman and the others are in a workgroup.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Not a problem. With Win2K/XP, the laptop will still be able to keep the domain logon settings, and you can log on fine, because NT cache's logon security locally (will just tell you no domain server is available, and naturally any mapped drives you normally have at the office will be shown with a red X and unavailable).

As for TCP/IP settings, if they run DHCP at the office, and at home you have a router that runs DHCP...again, you're fine. If you have a fixed TCP setup at the office, then you'll have to adjust your home LAN to match that scope.

If you have DHCP at the office, and nothing at home to run DHCP...then..hmmm, you'll have a harder time. But there is an excellent program for laptop "road warriers" who face some awkward setups, it's called NetSwitcher.

Afterthought....you could also, if you don't internet connection share at home, simply setup your network at home using NetBEUI....that way if your TCP/IP is difficult to adjust on the laptop due to the office LAN, you don't need to touch it.

This is all taking into consideration....that they don't have policies locking down any tampering with the laptop (meaning you're able to be a local administrator).
