Sympatico help

Post by christine186 »

TCP options string = 0204058601010402

MTU = 1454
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.

MSS = 1414
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1414, which equals MSS.
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 8484
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 8484
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
520352 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 8)
260176 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4)
130088 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2)
65044 (MSS x 46)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 339.36 kbps (42.42 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 135.744 kbps (16.968 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 119 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

4934047 connections tested since 03.10.2001.

Analyzer version: 1.02 - updated 09.20.2002

I have an HP pent 3 256 ram 60 Gig Hd and am on Sympatico high speed running Windows 98Se with all the updates.
My questions are:
What is Cablenut and do I need to download it?
How can I change things to make this computer faster?
What else needs to be changed besides the MTU?
Should I update my Access manager to the newest version first?
TIA.

Hi Christine :D , CableNut is a connection tweaking app and in my opinion yes you do need it. Your MTU should be 1492, look in the Help & Tips link in my signature for some fixes for your MTU, once you get it straight download CableNut and we can optimize the rest of your settings. :) ;)

That's my first problem, I did change my setting for MTU from Bob's site but it didn't stick, that's why I'm wondering if I need to update my access manager first.

Maybe so but there are a number of places in the registry where it needs to be set properly, I have all the fixes I know of listed, hopefully one of them will work. :) ;)

You look pretty good your RWIN is lower then the recommended of 24038, if you want to raise it download Dr.TCP from that page, open it and choose your Ethernet card from the drop down menu. Set your Receive Window to the value I posted, close Dr.TCP and reboot.
You can also up your MTU to 1492, by changing it in Access Manager (Which is EnterNet). I keep posting the instructions here, so now I'm just going to post the link to the instructions to save space and stop repeating myself. http://www.carricksolutions.com/enternet.htm#27

Speed test at 1484. I can't find Dr. TCP but I've done the patch and my MTU settings are now staying in. Cablenut numbers are in as well. :) Thanks again to both of you guys.

Way off Christine, use the settings I gave you above, that RWIN is WAY too high for your connection. Just open CableNut and put in the above settings and select save to registry and reboot and your done. :) :D

With an RWIN that high you will have slow web page loading and allot of retransmissions.... it's basic TCP/IP. One week you say this the next week you say that Lobo..... you will never understand how things work. :rolleyes:

Oh I understand slowpoke, she's getting good speed leave her be, yes the RWIN works for some but not others, but it seems to work for her, you need to contact administrator of SG and have him put in RWIN you choose

Uh...guys....slow it is... the optimizer is out and I've double checked the numbers and they are all in properly. My speeds were high in the first place because I'm so close to the main but I don't know if I messed this up when I set up CableNut. Any ideas? :confused:

First off, I did follow these instruction step by step and second these guys can play and argue all they want. If you think you can help or do better, then go ahead and do it. Lobo, mnosteele is right, my pages are not loading. Bob said to do something with my ethernet card but I'm on a USB modem. I should have said that because maybe that's the problem. I've checked and rechecked the numbers and they are all in properly. My MTU is at 1492. The microsoft patch is in. I rebooted after every step and did it in the order posted. I did not post in this forum to ignore the advice given to me and if Andrzej needs a translater then I can set you up in the general forum. :(

You can not tweak with 2 programs, save Optimizer for ping tests, set it to default, in Cablenut use his settings above, click on save to registry at bottom of adjuster and reboot :)

you are TOTALY right
as you follow ME it is not my native lng :cool:

IMHO(in my humble opinion) this tread your responce were very, VERY weak
for 3*experts sugestions
your posts were with new results & unknown settings.
I'm in doubts:
1.Q do you use TCP Optymizer before last TCP/IP Analizer result?
2.Q do you explain post with sugestion to use one?
3.Q do you explain any yours result after adviced experts settings?

please apologize me
I'm no argue my advices for person with "weak expression"... :D

Ten miutes later.....Lobo, I'm using his numbers and have taken out the TCP Optimizer totally. My speed tests at the Sympatico site are really bad. 130 I think was the last one. I know that the CableNut settings are right but my question is this, did I somehow miss a step? Is Access Manager set up to handle these settings? Look guys, I'm just guessing because I really don't know. Maybe tonight I will remove everthing and start fresh.

For my speed tests I link directly from my Sympatico start up page. I can't cut or copy it to post for you. I think my best bet is to start from scratch. I had to have done something wrong that I'm not seeing.

BTW pay attention
during instalation CN previous TCP/IP settings disapear

OTOH (on the other hand) & insted of summary known from your post
MTU = 1492 ... MSS = 1452
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 255552
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 63888
...
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 55 hops
...
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
...
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
...

I know what for w98SE vtcp 386 patch was already instaled.
Settings are good for yours ISP PPPoE - you still have internet
but your RWIN is too large
mnosteele52 sugest you
DefaultRecvWindow - 31944
..........
GlobalMaxTcpWindoSize - 31944

RWIN 31944 mean 22*yoursMSS(1452)
optimal for CAPS 1500kbps (187.5KBps) or even more

alogical SG Optymizer with above RWINsetting
<Settings>
DSL(PPPoE); CustomSeting
ModyfyALL NA
MTU=1492;
TTL=64;
TPC ReceiveWindow=31944 - as above
but WindowsScaling blank; TimeStamp blank
MTU Discovery=YES;
BlackHoleDedect=no
SelectiveACKs=YES
MaxDuplicateACKs=3
<OtherSetings>
MaxCpS=8; MaxCp1.0S=10 - as was sugested by mnosteele52
LAN Bs=Optymized - for IE>5.0 do not search other server
Apply changes
Above are vvvvvSIMILAR to yours :cool:
go ahead you can reach target :D
but please follow GURU

I did 3 speed tests and got 1400, 1402 and 1414 with Sympatico because the link to the OOL site gives me a dead page.
I took out CableNut completely.
I'm going to your links again to do some reading. I must have done something wrong....

Christine reinstall CableNut and use the settings I posted for you above and see how they work. Also take a look at this thread it may pertain to you, I'm not sure. Once you have used the settings I posted please do the OOL FTP speed test and another TCP/IP Analyzer test and post the results. The problem may be out of your control but I can assure you the settings I posted will only help your connection not hurt it. If things are still messed up we can go from there. :D ;)
