linux install

Post by DG »

ok, ive got a dell laptop here with all the bells and whistles, and a old compaq armada laptop with a com port, and dos. is there any way i can connect the two so that i can copy a copy of redhat from the dell to compaq? ive got a cable adaptor that converts cat5 to the com connection, but i dont know how to get the dell with win2k to communication with the laptop with dos. ive got a 2 gig partition on the lap top to copy linux to, also.

this would be much easier if the laptop had a cd rom drive...

thanks for any help...

Do you have any kind of proxy running on your dell? what you need to do is create the network install boot disk, you can find out how to do this at redhat.com in the install guide. You can also find a more detailed explanation on how to do the network install as well.

Not the case. I'm assuming the compaq has a floppy drive? by using the network boot floppy, there would be no need for DOS

You don't need dos on the compaq to install Linux....put your linux install cd in your dell.

Make the boot floppy for redhat and put it in the compaq.

connect the two computers via nics with crossover cable.

make sure the dell is sharing the cd-rom drive.

turn on the compaq with the redhat boot floppy in it and it should autodetect the nic and you should start the install process....just direct it to the dell's cd-rom drive on the network.

I think........ ;)
