upgraded video card...but ping went up!
I upgraded my int. vc to a gf 3 ti500, expecting my ping to decrease at least slightly. But to my surprise, my ping went up instead. Any reason for this??
i guess a faster vid card would slow your cpu down some but shouldnt screw with your ping mine didnt move from a G2 to a G4
if your on dial up your ping can jump around same with cable around peak hours
thats all have to do with your isp not realy to much one can do to his pc to ping better
what you on?

i've got a p4 1.6, which I think should be plenty fast for the gf3. ALso I'm on adsl, not dialup or cable. I think its probably the new 1.4+1.5 updates that's causing the rise in ping.Originally posted by settrippen

how high is it maken it go up?
and like Jin said ping has to do with isp not vid cards
but you can do 10 pings to say yahoo and most likly they will change if the site has trafic so it is normal for jumps in pings even in game as more peeps come in or more fire jump what not all takes bandwith from host

In some games, FPS does indeed affect lag...because of the demand on the server for updates per frame. Each frame wants an update from the server. Higher FPS....shouldn't be too difficult to see how much more of a load it puts on your internet connection.
This was very evident, and quite well known, back in the early days of Quake 1 and Quake 2. When 3Dfx cards were coming out, everyone switched from the old Stealth cards, etc..to the higher performance Rendition and Voodoo cards. Suddenly peeps went from FPS in the teens or twenties, to the 30's, 40's, 60's, or higher if you were lucky and had dual Voodoo's in SLI mode...heh, man I loved that.
Anyways, you could bring up your netstat utility while playing...adjust your FPS...and clearly see the relationship between FPS and your ping.
Accordingly you can adjust your rate in the game to comp for this.

1) Your ping can rise alot if your internet connection can't handle the higher FPS. The average cable/dsl user can support about 125 FPS.
2) If your playing CS and you can't get over 60 FPS. You need to go to your display settings and turn off vsync. This setting is under your OpenGL settings. It will give you around a 10-30 FPS increase. When I turned mine off, it went from 60 to 99. I'm running a Geforce 2 MX 32 MB with an AMD XP 1.4 GHz.
I hope this helps...

The question is what's the point? I run every game I own with vsync on and I wouldn't have it any other way. My hardware always runs any game I play with a steady 60fps and everything looks great, and I don't have that whole "visual tearing" thing going on which gets sooo annoying. Sure, I can turn off vsync and push some ridiculous framerates in certain games, but why? No human being can visually see the difference between 60fps and 3000. Matter of fact, past about 32fps, you can't see the difference anyway. My choices in my game settings go to visual quality over getting the most ridiculously high framerates I can get. For example, I run Jedi Knight II and play at a resolution of 1280x1024 with the max quality possible and vsync on. My FPS never drops below 60 and the game runs smooth as a baby's ass. Also, it looks amazing.
Basically, my suggestion is this -- set your quality as high as possible without dropping framerates below that refresh rate on your monitor, and you'll have the best experience possible, not to mention you'll lose the problems with ping. SOME games tend to only send the packets necessary to render the frames your system is processing, so if you're gettin 300fps, your connection may try to get that as well, meaning slowdowns and high pings.
Maybe I'm wrong, maybe this will help. But what do I know?

I agree to a point, I'm for higher visuals over high FPS...., but adding to what I mentioned above about it putting demand on your internet connection, one point about having a very high FPS is on quite a few gaming engines, the slow rate one-shot-one-kill weapons, I'll take Quake 2 for example with the rail gun,...having a higher FPS than another player means you have a higher communication rate with the server....and if your talking to the server 4 times faster than the other guy, chances are 3 times better the server will recognize your left click before the other guy's shot when it comes down to "who gets the first shot off".Originally posted by -w|sh-

Leave Vsync on.. The XP prob with this affect the FPS and the refresh rate. XP runs teh games at a refresh rate of 60, which is a lot worse for your eyes per say 100, if you vidcard and monitor can handle it. Also turning Vsync off degrades the IQ of the games.
The solution to this problem is using on the of 3 Fixes found on http://www.guru3d.com
THe best one i found on there, easiest to use, is the one advertisd as a "one time use, and never have to run again..."
or sumthing across that line
