If the NIC card is a 3Com of fairly recent manufacture, and your motherboard supports "wake on lan", give it a shot. Worst that can happen is wol doesnt work. :)

First, the motherboard and NIC both need to support WOL. IF they both do, normally there will be a separate small connector cable that runs from the card to the mobo, because until that switch flips, the mobo isn't listening to the NIC.

That is a common, and valid concern for people on Cable internet, as coax has a tendency to expand and contract inside the cable and at connectors with changes in temperature. But DSL runs over phone wires, simple solid-core one-pair phone wires. Unless the "slick" is cut or damaged, you shouldn't ...

I think you are chasing your tail. If they are using PPPoE, you have to authenticate, period. Your DSL circuit is routed to AOL's router, which passes your auth to a radius of some type for authentication, which means no.

DSL, the limitation of 18000 feet has to do with the length of wire a signal will travel at a given frequency.

aDSL actually works beyond 23000 feet, but no telco is going to install it past 18k, because of erroring with decreased signal strength.

Your theoretical speed doesn't decrease with ...

Good point Cruelson

This can be and IS an intrusion ...
