The site was started by me, Philip in early 1998. I had some extra time right after college, which coincided with me being a beta-tester for the Road Runner cable modem
broadband in the Tampa Bay area. I was one of the few people on the
node at the time... And Tampa Bay was one of the 3 areas in the country where Cable modem implementation was being tested. After considerable research and testing, the
broadband patches were developed, and an early version of the site. Originally, the site was named "PH Net" and hosted on the RR provided 5 MB webspace. Soon, due to the growing interest it was moved to a separate hosting company.
A year later, in May 1999 the SpeedGuide.net
domain was purchased. The original
broadband tweaks, tips and patches were still the most visited section of the site, and it was still the only site on the Net dedicated to tweaking
broadband.
We've considerably grown over the following years, both in content and number of users, however our focus still remains tweaks and information on
broadband for the benefit of the growing global
broadband community.
Even though there are many sites on the Internet that have developed patches, programs and tweaks on their own, SpeedGuide.net has been there since the beginning, has played a major role in spreading the information to
broadband users, and remains one of the main
broadband resources on the Internet.
